To Apply Early Action or Not? A College Admissions Drama in One Act

Scene: A high school student’s bedroom. The desk is cluttered with college brochures. A weary parent enters, application deadlines in hand.

Parent: My child, the fateful hour fast approacheth!
November’s call is near, yet thou dost tarry.
Why dost thou delay in thine applications?
Student: Oh, gentle Parent, press me not so soon!
Hast thou not heard? The winter's chill doth grant me time—January’s deadline yet remains afar.
Shall I not craft my work with careful hand?
Parent: Thy reasoning is fair, yet heed me well!
For Early Action brings forth many gifts:
A verdict swift, before the snows have melted,
And merit gold that only early seekers find.
Shall thou forsake such treasures for mere sloth?
Student: But nay! My words are rough, my essays weak!
Shall I submit a work half-formed, unripe?
Better to wait, to labor through the frost,
Than rush and find myself undone by haste!
Parent: Thy caution speaks of wisdom, yet thou dost err.
For lo, the binding chains of Early Decision
Shall ne’er ensnare thee! Nay, thou art free!
To apply in haste yet choose with patient hand.
Early Action giveth choice, not chains.
Student: Yet what of toil? What of added strain?
Shall I not drown beneath my weary load?
Parent: Nay, dear one, for the toil shall bring thee peace.
When spring doth bloom and others quake in fear,
Thy fate shall be secured, thy burden light.
And should the offers fail to please thine eye,
Thou yet may’st wield the quill in January.
Student: Dost thou say that I may have it both?
The early boon and yet the later chance?
Parent: Indeed, ‘tis so! Apply thou early now,
And still, if fate requireth, send yet more.
For scholarship and peace of mind await,
But only those who act before too late.
Student: Then hand me forth my laptop, noble Parent!
I shall submit with swiftness and with care.
For what is gained in waiting past November
If all is gained much sooner and with cheer?
Parent: Well spoken, child! Let deadlines not ensnare thee!
Go forth and claim the future that awaits.
(Exeunt, as student opens laptop and begins application.)
The Moral of Our Tale: Why Early Action Wins the Day
If thou art wavering betwixt Early Action and Regular Decision, let these words guide thee:
Early Action bindeth thee not! Unlike Early Decision, thou art free to choose from many offers come spring.
Scholarship gold oft favors those who act with haste. Some merit awards are granted only to early applicants.
To apply early is to grant thyself peace. No frantic scrambling when others dost panic.
So, delay thee not, noble families! Let applications fly before the November moon doth wane. And if more guidance thou seekest, know that within my course, all such mysteries are revealed!
